Matt here- Day 2 was a doozie. 24 miles and non-stop climbing. Most of the day was on sun blasted single track. It was red with some sparkles in it and it gave me a pretty good nature high. I enjoy the ups and it wasn't long before I had gotten separated from Jenn and our Trail buddy Cam. Everyone here is on their own journey though and we would see each other periodically through the day. At mile 16 there was a beautiful clearing I had lunch at. I sat alone and felt the breeze rush across my burnt neck while I ate my canned Vienna sausage and BBQ flavor corn nuts. So good! It'd been about a half hour since I saw Jenn. I decided to leave a note but as I finished my last sentence she came walking up. It was only 7 more miles to the Mt Laguna store where our resupply boxes were, but more importantly where Mexican coke and beer awaited. The store closed at 5 so I had a little under 3 hours to cover the distance. I was cruising! I had my stupid little trekking pole stride so tight! I felt like an Olympic walker! I finally got high enough to get into the pines and it was a whole new level of nature stoke. The little brown trail sliced through green meadows decorated in crosshatch with fallen trees. There were these awesome slanted granite rocks that grew tall out of the ground and I thought to myself, "Self, that looks like a great place to poop." And it was! Lighter now I pressed on, passing Mexican families hiking around the Mt Laguna Recreation area. I thought about what they thought of me and laughed like I would if I saw myself. I finally made it to sunrise highway. I walked a quarter mile to the store and now here I sit eavesdropping on hikers more stoked on their nicknames than the trail. Good for them. To my left is my Mexican coke. To my right, a 32oz BudLight. I picked up 2 resupply boxes and am cursing myself for packing so much food. I want to throw it all away but I have this weird hoarding thing going on. So I'll carry all my food and continue offering it to other hikers and townie girls on razor scooters.
Signing off.
Love Matt
HI Guys!! Two days in and your still alive and happy, woohoo! Can't wait for my week on the trail! I'm looking forward to your blog entries to live vicariously through you. I like that you are trailing with Cam I meet him after you walked off yesterday. He seems very nice.
